INTERVIEW WITH DR.SIVAMANI ( 25-11-2016)

EXCERPTS FROM THE INTERVIEW PREPARED BY ADITI

We started from the school at 2.45 pm to Athani Hospital, Kozhinjanpara.  Our group consisted of Suraj, Abhinav Krishna , Swati.S and I, Aditi. We were led by our English Teacher, Mrs. Rugmini Menon, and Librarian, Mr. Mujib Rahiman.K.U.  We reached the hospital by 3.50 pm.  Our purpose of visit was to interview Dr.Sivamani, Dermatologist, Athani Hospital,  about various issues related to burn injuries.

We were warmly welcomed by the hospital staff and led to Dr.Sivamani’s Consulting Room.  There he greeted us with cheers and made us comfortable.  We introduced ourselves and informed him about the intention of our visit.

Suraj:         Doctor, how long have you been looking after burn injury cases?
Doctor:      Since the completion of my Medical Degree, I have been looking after burn injury cases.  For the last fifty years, I am in the job.
Suraj:         Out of the patients consulted during the last month, what is the approximate percent of children with burns?
Doctor:      Even though I used to receive a number of patients with burn injuries in the early days, now the number has got reduced due to the advent of electricity and discontinuance of kerosene lamps for the purpose of study for children.
After Suraj, Abhinav Krishna asked the Doctor the following queries:
Abhinav:   What are the major causes for burns?
Doctor:      Burn injuries are caused by extreme temperatures- due to burning of crackers, fire, electricity, cooking gas, oils, etc. and also due to extreme cold conditions.
Abhinav Krishna was followed by Swathi.  She wanted the Doctor to clarify the following:
Swathy:     When you get the patients in the middle of night, Sir, do you feel comfortable?
Doctor:      Cases related to burn injuries are very rare in the odd hours.  Even if isolated issues come up, I do not feel any discomfort to attend the patients.  It is my job to attend the needy, irrespective of time and place.
Swathy:     What is the general treatment given to the burnt victims?
Doctor:      The burnt portion of the body of the victim should be kept immersed in the cold water as long as possible.  I will not recommend items like toothpaste, honey, etc. to be applied to the burnt portion, since these contain various chemicals. At the same time, antiseptic cream for burns, like Burnol, can be used.
The last set of questions was asked by me.
Aditi:         Do you enjoy doing this job?
Doctor:      As treating patients is my job, I enjoy it very much.
Aditi:         What are the preventive measures to be taken to avoid burn injuries especially while lighting crackers?
Doctor:      First of all I would not recommend usage of fire crackers or fireworks as there is a lot of involvement of child labour in manufacturing these items.  I have never burst crackers in my entire life.  However, my advice to you is, while lighting crackers, make use of a stick to keep your body away from the crackers.  Also avoid lighting crackers in a bunch.  Never attempt to light the cracker by holding it in your hand.  While lighting crackers, always wear non-inflammable clothes.
We thanked him whole-heartedly for sparing his precious time and sharing the valuable information and useful advice.
We left the hospital at 4.00 pm and reached the school at 4.30 pm.
